At B’ezri, we always say, "Behind every number is a family."
Statistics are so helpful, aren't they? They give valuable insight to better understand and evaluate information, help us see patterns, measure scope, and make informed decisions. Which, in our case, includes the scale of need B’ezri has to address and the resources necessary to respond to it effectively.
At the same time though, there is so much that numbers cannot capture.
Actual people.
They can't capture their faces or their stories. They can't capture emotions - the tears of worry, the stress, the exhaustion, the hope, or the determination of people trying their best to deal with their circumstances.
But every cold, impersonal figure represents real parents trying to provide for their children. Real families making impossible decisions, and real people doing everything they can to preserve dignity in extremely difficult situations.
The Many Layers of Financial Hardship
A family facing financial hardship is rarely dealing with just one issue.
For some, it's a single mother carrying the weight of raising her children alone while also stretching one income to cover rent, groceries, school supplies, and utility bills.
For others, it's a large family where every child's needs multiply the cost of even the most basic necessities, leaving parents working hard yet still falling behind.
A soldier's family - where the father is an IDF reservist called up again and again - struggles with the strain his repeated absence puts on family relationships, alongside the financial hit of his reduced (or lost) income.
Some families are struggling after a serious illness has changed every aspect of their lives, while others are trying to rebuild after the death of a spouse, leaving them to cope with both emotional grief and financial uncertainty.
Circumstances vary widely from one household to the next, but each one shares the same hope: that they will be able to stay afloat and function as normally as possible. This is the reality B’ezri works every day to address.
How B'ezri Responds to Families in Need
What that means in practice is that we do our best to respond to each family’s situation in a meaningful way. We work to identify where we can truly make an impact, and when a need falls outside our direct framework, we look for ways to still ease the pressure on the household in other areas - so that while we may not be able to solve every challenge, we can help reduce the burden in the places where support can make a real difference.
For example, if a family is dealing with a serious medical situation that requires expensive treatment beyond our scope, we may not be able to fund the procedure itself, but we can help ensure that basic needs like food and daily essentials are still covered so the household is not pushed into crisis on every front.
Understanding the Scope of Our Work
Now let’s get back to statistics-well, B’ezri statistics that is. We reach
tens of thousands of families annually. Our Keren Almanos supports more than
850 widows, caring for over
6,000 children. Each year, we help facilitate more than
3,000 dignified weddings, provide over
$3 million in food support for the holidays, and distribute over
$2 million in summer assistance to help families cover essential needs during one of the most financially demanding times of the year.
As an organization with over
40 years of experience running
15 different programs at an overhead of just
7%, these figures represent only a portion of our overall activity.
Programs That Reflect Real Lives
The numbers are definitely significant, but they are especially meaningful because of the people behind them.
The widows who wake up each morning carrying the weight of both parenting and loss have a reduced sense of strain due to our stipends. The weddings are now milestones where young couples begin their lives together without the burden of overwhelming debt hanging over them from day one. Holiday support is the difference between children feeling “less than” and children sitting at a full Yom Tov table like everyone else around them. Summer assistance means a parent who was worried about how to get through the long break can finally breathe a little, knowing there is food on the table and some structure in place for their children.
Support That Goes Beyond Numbers
At B’ezri we believe support means more than providing financial assistance. It means reminding families that they are not alone - that we are there to help them get through their challenges. We care about each case that comes to us, and we work to respond as quickly as possible so families are not left waiting in moments of urgency.
When we speak about the thousands of families we assist each year, it is easy to focus on the numbers, but the numbers are only part of the story.
Behind every one of those numbers is a real person facing a very real moment of uncertainty. It is in those moments that our responsibility is clearest: to respond with sensitivity, urgency, and care, and to make sure that no family feels like just another statistic.
Because behind every statistic is a story - and every story matters.
