All will Receive Vital Help to Make it a Happy Purim

Sunday, February 01, 2026

As Purim rapidly approaches, American Friends of Yad Eliezer/B’ezri is once again ensuring that families in need will be able to celebrate. Our programs this year will benefit 800 widows and 4,000 needy households across Israel so they can experience the holiday with genuine Purim simcha.

The sirens may be paused but families are still reeling from the Swords of Iron war. Widespread financial need comes against a backdrop of countrywide economic hardship: according to a recent national report, nearly two million people in Israel are living below the poverty line, including roughly 880,000 children - more than one in four children nationwide. Israel ranks near the top among OECD countries for child poverty, and food insecurity remains a significant concern for many families.

The number of households that were once managing but are now struggling has risen substantially. Basic needs are hard to come by and rising costs - from groceries to utilities - make Purim preparations an additional financial burden instead of a day to celebrate.

But this doesn't alter our mission. AFYE/B'ezri is there, to ensure families can have a dignified holiday. Proceeds from our Purim Cards will assist them with Purim-related expenses. Our Matanot L’Evyonim program, will provide direct, discreet financial support that enables families to set tables, prepare meals, and celebrate without stress.

Applications for assistance have already begun and will continue to rise in the weeks leading up to Purim and we will allocate nearly $1 million in funding to meet current needs.

Together, these initiatives help ensure that Purim is marked not by worry or absence, but by warmth, generosity, and simcha - reminding families across Israel that they have a place to turn to for help.
