On a day to day basis, you wouldn’t believe the number of forms, phone calls and emails that pass through the American Friends of Yad Eliezer office, each request inquiring about getting badly needed help for one necessity or another. You wouldn’t believe how many hours are spent by our staff each day - and often, night - planning, discussing, processing, and doling out (super effectively, by the way) critical forms of aid to all kinds of people struggling with poverty, in all kinds of challenging situations.

Because that number is so high, making it so hard to grasp, I’ve decided to share just a sampling of some of the reactions we’ve recently received, that reflect the incredible impact tzedaka makes on the countless families and individuals who benefit from our support.

It’s not unusual for recipients to describe that impact as a “salvation”. Others will call it a “lifeline”. Many times it’s even referred to as a “miracle”. So with that in mind, in honor of Chanukah, a holiday replete with miracles, here are eight actual reactions (sent to us in writing), that will fill you, as it did us, with warmth and light.

One: Kol Kallah Fund

"To the wonderful people at American Friends of Yad Eliezer,
My daughter is getting married in less than 2 weeks and I have not, as of yet, purchased linens or towels for her. You cannot imagine what it meant to me to receive a phone call that you will be very generously sponsoring my daughter’s trousseau. It was a salvation from shomayim for us. The kalla was so happy and I was relieved beyond words. I felt that Hashem had answered my prayers. May Hashem generously repay your chesed - for all that you have done for me, my daughter, and for all of Klal Yisroel."

Two & Three: Emergency Fund

-"Thank you again and again for helping me and my family! My boys have been sleeping on mattresses on the floor, for I don’t know how long. Having actual beds for them now-it’s a huge relief! G-d bless you all! It really makes me all choked up. I am extremely overwhelmed and grateful for your kindness and generosity."

-"I just received the washing machine! Thank you very, very much!!
I think I don't even realize the difference it will make not having to find a way to put the door back on in order to close the washing machine, and push it with my foot in an effort to seal it while it fills water to minimize the spill - and cleaning the water after each and every load!
It will be so good to have some sense of normalcy.

I am very grateful and I pray that one day I will be able to be on the giving side again and support the important work you do."

Four & Five: Adopt-A-Wedding
-"Tremendous thanks to you for the support you’ve sent to help us make our daughter’s wedding. May you be zoche to do many more mitzvos!
There are just not enough words with which to thank you..
My family was moved to tears when they heard the news of your assistance.
This zchus will stand for you, forever."

-"Wooooooooow!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I am simultaneously thrilled with happiness and I am crying non-stop.
I am already feeling more at ease and calm as I anticipate walking down to my chuppah.
Thank you with all my heart."

Six: Food Support

"When I got your email confirming we could get help with food purchases, I was speechless. I simply couldn’t believe it. I thought to myself, really??!!
You are giving me and my children a lifeline. Thank you SO SO much. May Hashem bless you and your kindest donors."

Seven: Bar Mitzvah Twinning

"Your tsadik (or tsadekess) donor is doing an unbelievable chessed for us and for our son. I’m having a hard time finding the words to express my thanks sufficiently. To be honest I think it’s simply impossible. I hope for them to know that they are really changing the atmosphere in our home, Baruch Hashem."

Eight: Agunos, Grushos & Melamdim

"I am so grateful and would like to say that I had really hard nisyonos this year, and on top of them, debt problems because of a company who unfortunately took high advantage of me, in a very dishonest and cruel way. I am so careful with the little money I have, and I couldn’t pay the wrongful bill. I tried to get this injustice worked out, but it was to no avail.

The bill may not have been a lot for many people, “just” a few hundred dollars, but it is a fortune for me and was yet another debt that was weighing on me, putting my family at risk. I can't get over the degree to which you helped me recoup the loss so I could avoid further legal problems and focus once again on trying to provide for my children. You were there when no one else was. Once again, I am humbled and grateful that Hashem is showing me how He is taking care of me to the "T", and that your organization is the shaliach to show me so!

Please pass on my tremendous gratitude to the donors who should be thanked.
This was truly a miracle for me."
