Lets help the Needy

Many Jewish boys look forward to their bar mitzvahs for years before the event. They will finally be considered an adult and have the priviledge of donning tefillin. But what about the Jewish boys who cannot afford tefillin, let alone a celebration?

While all of his friends are honored with lavish receptions, new suits, new shoes, and shiny boxes of tefillin, the boy from a poverty-stricken home will be deeply disappointed as he watches from the sidelines knowing that he will enjoy none of that. His special day will come and go with no celebration at all.

Yad Eliezer wants to enable every Jewish boy to celebrate his bar mitzvah with pride.

Join Me in Honor of My Bar Mitzvah

Dear friends and family,

My Bar Mitzvah is coming up, and I am very excited. But I started thinking that not every family can afford to celebrate their son’s Bar Mitzvah. I never realized how lucky I was. I felt I had to help someone else. So I decided to raise money for a boy in Israel my age who will become Bar Mitzvah soon, but his family does not have the money to make a party, buy tefillin, or even buy him clothes for the simcha. An organization called Yad Eliezer will enable a boy to celebrate this important milestone with just $1,000.

To raise the entire amount for my Bar Mitzvah “twin” in Israel, I am organizing a “Kick For a Great Cause!” soccer marathon with the help of Rovers Soccer International. The fundraising event will take place on Sunday April 3rd 2016 at Donaldson Park (rain date April 10th) from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM. Coach Spencer Rockman and his professional staff will help you build new skills and coordinate non-stop pick-up games by age. Your whole family will have fun playing soccer while helping a boy in Israel!

Coach Spencer spoke to me how playing soccer and having fun can be elevated to become purposeful. We read in Rabbi Abraham Twersky’s book “Living Each Day” that “Koheles dismisses all earthly pursuits as being futile and worthless” (57). A commentary points out that although zero has no value, and a thousand zeros are still nothing, they assume an astronomical value when the digit 1 is placed before them. Similarly, all worldly pursuits are futile and worthless only if they are not associated with anything of real substance. When we place a spiritual value as the purpose of our earthly pursuit, what was previously futile now becomes meaningful and precious.

Please help me make this a meaningful event. 100% of the registration fee ($15 per person, $25 per family) will go directly to Yad Eliezer’s support for my “twin” in Israel. If you are unable to participate but wish to assist in my Bar Mitzvah “twinning” project, a donation of any size will be gratefully accepted!
